What is Naturopathic Medicine?

NATUROPATHIC MEDICINE is a primary health care system that uses the wisdom of the ages - a natural medicine for a natural cure. It is a system of medicine that uses a holistic approach to individualize a treatment plan for the patient to find a cure, not just relief of their symptoms. The focus of naturopathic medicine is on prevention of disease, treating the cause of the disease and maintenance of optimal health. NDs often use a combination of therapies on an individual basis for maximum benefit

NATUROPATHIC DOCTORS (ND's) recognize that health is influenced by many factors: psychological, environmental, nutritional and physical. The primary goal of naturopathic medicine is therefore to address the cause rather than simply treating or suppressing symptoms.

Doctors of Naturopathic Medicine have a minimum of 7 years of training: 3 to 4 years of premedical studies at a university followed by the 4 year intensive full time program at an accredited college of Naturopathic Medicine. The Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine in Toronto is the only one in Canada (there are 4 colleges in North America),

After graduating from one of these colleges, the Ontario ND must pass rigorous North American-wide standardized licensing exams, as well as provincial board exams, to obtain a licence. ND's in Ontario are licensed and regulated by the Board of Directors of Drugless Therapy - Naturopathy.
What is the Difference Between Naturopathy and Homeopathy?

Naturopathic Doctors can be considered the general practitioners of natural medicines. We are trained in many modalities of treatment including homeopathy. Homeopaths are not licensed and primarily do just the one modality of treatment. Naturopathic Doctors (NDs) are licensed and registered in Ontario and are trained in nutrition, eastern and western herbal medicine and different body techniques.

Being in Ottawa and on the border of Quebec there can be some confusion as to the differences between NDs in Ontario and naturopaths in Quebec. There are no licensing and regulatory bodies for naturopaths in Quebec so there are no requirements for education and training. Due to this it is a good idea ot ask questions before booking an appointment to determine qualifications.
